Complete Training
About 4 hours of classroom instruction (online or in-person with us), a 25-question test, and a 50-round shooting qualification: 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 at 7 yards, 10 at 15 yards.
Submit Your Application
Apply online with your Texas Driver License, required history, and your completed LTC-104 form from training.
Get Fingerprinted
DPS uses IdentoGO for fingerprinting, with locations across the state. You’ll receive a link and code to schedule directly with DPS.

Bring: your handgun (rentals available), 50 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection, and photo ID.
LTC Proficiency Test Only
Already completed your classroom portion — with us or another vendor? We can run your proficiency demonstration for you. It takes 90 minutes to two hours and happens entirely on the range.

- The full 50-round proficiency demonstration
- We diagnose which fundamentals need work before you shoot it
- Your paperwork checked and completed on the day
- Time to ask an experienced instructor about the licence process
Bring: your handgun (rentals available), 50 rounds minimum — bring more if you would like to reshoot or work on fundamentals — eye and ear protection, and photo ID. Already did your online classroom with us? You pay only the range fee, roughly $20 — contact us and we will set it up.
LTC Classroom Only (Online)
The classroom half of the licence, online and self-paced. Work through it from home on your own schedule, then complete your range proficiency demonstration later — with us, or with any vendor you choose.
- Covers all four DPS-required areas: weapons law and use of deadly force, handgun use and safety, non-violent dispute resolution, and safe storage
- Roughly 4–6 hours, available 24/7 at your own pace
- The required 25-question written test included
- Certificate of completion issued when you finish
- Add your range proficiency demonstration whenever you are ready
Note: this option does not include the 50-round range qualification, so it will not complete your licence on its own. Pair it with our Proficiency Test Only session above.
Who Is — And Isn't — Eligible For A Texas LTC
Texas DPS sets the eligibility rules under Texas Government Code §411.172. Here’s the general picture — always confirm your specific situation on the Texas DPS website before applying.
Generally Eligible
- At least 21 years old (18+ if active-duty military or an honorably discharged veteran)
- A legal resident of Texas, or qualify under the active-military exception
- Eligible to purchase a handgun under Texas and federal law
- No felony convictions, and not currently charged with a felony
- Capable of exercising sound judgment in the use and storage of a handgun
- Not chemically dependent and free of disqualifying intoxication offenses
- Complete the required classroom/online instruction and range proficiency test
Generally Not Eligible
- Convicted of a felony, or currently charged with a felony or qualifying misdemeanor
- Convicted of a Class A or B misdemeanor within the last 5 years
- Convicted of an offense involving family violence, or subject to an active protective order
- Chemically dependent, or diagnosed with a disqualifying psychiatric condition
- Determined by a licensed physician to be incapable of safely using or storing a handgun
- Under 21 without qualifying active-duty or veteran status
- Not a resident of Texas and do not qualify under a military exception
