Texas License to Carry (LTC)

Texas allows permitless carry — so why still get licensed? Here’s why it matters, who qualifies, who doesn’t, and exactly how the process works.

Why Get Licensed

Why You Should Still Get Your Texas LTC

Constitutional carry means you don’t need a license to carry a handgun in Texas — but an LTC still gives you real, practical advantages.

Know The Law, Not Just The Trigger

Our course walks through exactly where you can and can't legally carry — so you can protect yourself while staying firmly inside the law.

Carry In More Places

LTC holders can carry in more locations than permitless carriers — including state parks and certain private businesses that require a license to enter armed.

Reciprocity In 37+ States

Traveling out of state? Your Texas LTC is recognized in over 37 states, letting you carry concealed legally well beyond Texas's borders.

A Credential, Not Just A Permit

At $40 for a 5-year license, your LTC also functions as state-issued proof of a background check — often making police interactions smoother.

Eligibility

Who Is — And Isn't — Eligible For A Texas LTC

Texas DPS sets the eligibility rules under Texas Government Code §411.172. Here’s the general picture — always confirm your specific situation on the Texas DPS website before applying.

Generally Eligible

Generally Not Eligible

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Eligibility rules can change — verify your eligibility on the Texas DPS website (Regulatory Services > Handgun Licensing) or ask us before you book training.

The Process

Four Steps To Your License

Plan for roughly 60 days from application to license in hand.

01

Verify Eligibility

About 4 hours of classroom instruction (online or in-person with us), a 25-question test, and a 50-round shooting qualification: 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 at 7 yards, 10 at 15 yards.

03

Submit Your Application

Apply online with your Texas Driver License, required history, and your completed LTC-104 form from training.
