Safety is no joke when it comes to firearms. When things go wrong on a range or while shooting, it happens fast. that is why we follow basic safety rules. Failure to follow just one of these rules along with becoming complacent is usually the cause of an accident on the range. When we become overly confident with a firearm is usually when this happens. remember that an accident with a firearm could be life altering.
- Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. this is defined as the direction in which if I do have a negligent discharge, there is minimal damage and no loss of life.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. most striker fired pistols are not coming with any external safety that you need to deliberately disengage to allow the firearm to fire. Keeping your finger high and away from the trigger becomes your safety.
- Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. even if you have just checked and double checked the status of the gun, keep it pointed in a safe direction and keep your finger away from the trigger.
- Always know your target and what is beyond it. Know where your bullets are going. if they pass through your target, they may still be traveling with enough velocity to hurt or kill another.
- Never use drugs or alcohol while shooting. This seems like common sense, but you know the saying, common sense is not to common anymore. never take, drink eat or us a substance that may alter your physical or mental faculties while shooting. Keep prescriptions in mind with this rule, there are some powerful drugs out there that a Dr may prescribe.
